WELCOME!

Photo taken by unknown photographer at the Ward Bakery building circa 1930's

The Artists of the Mahoning Commons have been holding open house events  for over 5 years now. It is hard to believe that we have hosted so many events and that all this time has flown by. It has taken a lot of work and dedication from our members, yet is has been truly rewarding to promote the Arts and Culture here in Youngstown, Ohio.

As most of you know, we are located in the Old Ward Baking Company on lower Mahoning Avenue across from the U-Haul building (formerly the Isaly's Dairy). Our open house events are held twice a year, in late November and early May. We will host the next event on November 22, 23 and 29, from noon untill 5pm.

Each season we have upwards of 20 artists who participate. Studios will be open and artists will have displays in the hallways. The majority of the artists are professionals having attended art schools across the country. You will see paintings, pottery, sculpture, drawings, photography, jewelery, and an amazing array of handmade crafts. In addition Jerry Treharn, owner of the building, will have special tours of his fine Victorian furniture shop. 5 floors of this huge building will be open.

We often provide live music and food, usually coffee and cookies, but occaisionally a culinary surprise as well. Admission is free, as are the cookies! This is a family oriented event and children are welcome. There is plenty of parking surrounding the building as well as strong police presence from city and park police.

In the upcoming blog posts, I will go further into detail about our events, highlighting participating artists, keeping you abreast of developments, drawing your attention to events coinciding with ours, discussing the fantastic Silent Auction we provide (the best int town, YO!), and answering frequently asked questions.
